Siezed automatic radio antenna.
Just looking for advice.
1984 Carrera Targa. The automatic radio antenna is siezed. Not a big deal, but it would be nifty if it worked. It looks like a royal pain to get to and fix. Anybody out there tackled this? |

the antenna on my '84 was seized when I bought the car. I put in a cheap manual, then about a year later installed an electric replacement I bought off EBay. Just looked...Woody's Custom Shop has one for $80 that looks like what I bought (it was a good six years ago). Not hard to install. When I took the original electric apart to look at it, it was obvious I'd never get it working...massive corrosion.

Thanks, that's what I expect to see when I dive into it. Now the question is, should I buy the new one ahead of time or should I wait until after I see how bad it is.

Mine was full of aluminum mushrooms! If you want another auto model, eBay and search Blaupunkt auto antenna.

I rebuilt mine, pretty easy. You will need several screw drivers to hold the tabs while you work around the housing. Once apart you will see how dry the gears have become so a little cleaning and new grease there. Also, the telescopic metal antennae will have many years of grime. You will need to spray it down with a penetrating lube. Then, properly hook the wires to the battery to extend it while pulling the end until you get it fully extended. (I can't remember which way the wires go). Spray it down again and retract the antennae. Repeat this several times cleaning it each time you extend. Eventually you will get all of the black goop out and it will work fine then.
