83 911sc.. Where is Cold Start Valve located? Bentley no help

Beats me as to where the CST is located.
Must the engine be "dropped" in order to remove to bench test?
Danke.

First, it's down below the throttle body on the back of the airbox, it often is blue in color where it plugs into the harness. How you replace it depends on your level of abilities and your patience. It can be done it situ by removing the air boot and the throttle body to gain clearance, but it's still difficult.

The next best method is to do a partial motor drop and gain access that way, this gives you again more room, but it's still not the easiest piece to get to. The third of course would be a complete drop and then it's a simple matter of removing and replacing it.

But all of this is academic really, they rarely go bad. The thing you want to do is to check the power going to the valve from the thermotime switch, and the power going to the thermotime switch from the starter. If that's good then it's highly likely your CSV is working and the problem lies elsewhere.

Csv

Steve,
Here is a picture of the backside of my 78 CIS. CSV is in the lower center of the picture , just to the left of the fuel line clamp. Has an electrical connector. The blue connector in the upper left is the throttle plate switch.

If you think you have a problem, run contunity from the connector to the left rear chain cover which activates the 7th injector. You might find the continuity is to the air flow sensor because they are often crossed.
