Engine Flooding at Start-Up
 

The fuel injectors on my '78 SC start spraying full bore as soon as I crank the engine. The engine floods making the car impossible to start.

Any thoughts on why the car would flood this much?

WUR not working or set incorrectly.

AFR plate stuck in the up position?

Tony tested my WUR on his car and it worked fine.
I'll check the AFR plate to see if it's hung up.

A bit of history: I had a local shop replace the mixture screw because it was missing from my car when I bought it. After the shop did the work is when the car began being hard to start. I tried leaning out the mixture but the screw can only be tuned 2 clicks in the lean direction.

Something wrong with the mixture screw. You can actually see it if you look under the lever arm.

What are your fuel pressures?
Cold, system, warm etc.
You know the drill, especially if you've dealt with Tony! :)

Possibly AFR plate needs adjustment and may not reach its proper bottom position.

fuel distributor piston could be jammed - happened to me!

Check the cold start valve thermo switch for ground. If it is grounded all the time, the cold start valve will flood the engine. Just disconnect it to check if it still floods.

Brian,

I tested your WUR in my car and performed OK. Check if the plunger for FD is moving up and down freely. And does not bind when you push it up and let it drop back to position. Have you tinkered the mixture screw? If you did, you probably have set it too rich. Do you know your fuel pressures (control and system)?

All the above could be checked and inspected. It has been over a year since we last communicated. What's the problem you are having aside from this fuel delivery? Thanks.
