replacing Koni strut asssembly w/ bilsteins

My front Konis needs to be replaced. My mechanic said since I have bilsteins at the rears i should replace the front w/ bilsteins too. Does it justify replacing the whole assembly at $460 each side. I'd rather replaced the struts on the Konis and replaced my rear bilsteins w/ Konis too for about the same price here at Pelican. Then I have all new shocks for the price of just the bilstein front assembly. Is there a performance difference. Car is just street driven. I don't know what type of torsion bars it has. Any replies is greatly appreciated...thanks...nick

I would imagine that if you are trying to "match up" your front and rear dampers, then it would have to be cheaper to have your front konis rebuilt (this is the beauty of konis) and replace your rears with konis (but only if they really need replacing otherwise leave well enough alone).

Nick,

I am a big fan of KONI's ... having been a continuous user since 1969! Bilsteins seem to be more popular these days, but I am not sure if there is a significant difference in street driving!

That said, there is also a third option you did not mention ... finding a pair of used Bilsteins, and replacing those cartridges. Generally, around $300 will get you a pair of the used struts. So, that gives you a less expensive alternative.

Konis in front and Bilsteins in the back! Yes!!!

Definitely go w/ the new Konis in the front and the rear Bilsteins. If the Bilsteins are gas adjustables, adjust them to be slightly stiffer than the front Konis...it works great! Been using that combo for a while and like it on my '77 Carrera.
