Soft window Targa Conversion?
Has anyone ever converted a Targa to a soft window? I just saw a pic of 70flatsix's soft window on a different thread and it looks great. Seems like that would be a very cool mod to do.

I would like to see how it would look on a widebody targa.

Converting to a soft rear window targa

I can't recommend owing a soft window tagra, unless:
1) You don't mind it taking you approximately 10-12 minutes to take the window down and install the boot, or to remove the boot and zip the window back up, 2) You don't mind the sound level from the wind, the engine, and the exhaust note in the rear seats to be approximately 115 db at 120 kph, 3) You don't mind additional leaks onto your pristeen interior, and 4) You don't mind being the envy of every other Porsche 911 owner who sees your car! Carrera Charlie was converting a regular targa to a soft window. I haven't checked in with him on his progress for a few months. You might want contact him if you are serious about tackling that project. Good luck! |
Mark--
Great post. I was thinking about researching this project over the winter and maybe doing it next spring, depending on what I find out. I'd like a system where the original glass could be put back in without too much hassle for the winter. The only articles I've seen so far have been on converting to a cab, and those seem to involve too much body and trim mods to make getting the glass back in an easy project. Hopefully this thread will turn up some good info. Once I complete my research, I will probabaly post here with result and ask for additional comments. 70flatsix-- Re: #4-- Beautiful car, you bastard! |
The difficult part of this conversion is finding the hardware. The Targa bar itself is even different from what I've been able to figure out. -- Curt

Soft.......
Also note that the inner "liner" to the targa bar is different as well, and accomodates the latches.... Don't see any latches offered on the Ebay auction.....and those are VERY tough to find.

someone recently had the gear for this conversion up for sale in the classified section. claimed to have all parts etc. do search for that. I considered this last summer and actually spoke to a really nice guy that owned a shop, had the parts and wanted to sell them to me. When he found out that i wanted to do it myself he actually talked me out of it indicating that copnverting the targa bar (and getting to the bolts for that matter is a PITA. ). I recently have thought of also "temporarily" removing the rear window as I never drive in rain, etc. I, among others, am trying to develop weatherproof top for heavy rain protection for targa owners. i leave top at home so this is perfect.

Hello
Up to 73 the roll bar didn´t changed but theyr designed it to the 74 MY deleting the provisions for the soft top. Grüsse |
Curt - you're right, the additional hardware is the challenge. I am still looking around for someone who has all the hardware I need for my conversion.
I have talked with someone who said that OTTO's has the softwindow pattern and can produce a new one for approximately $270.00. Now if we could only find someone who can crank out the tensioning handles, brackets and hoops, we'd be all set. I'm not sure what the demand is for soft windows, otherwise it would appear there's an opportunity for a bit of business ... any interest Wayne??? Actually, I will start a new thread with a poll to see how many Targa owners are interested in converting to a soft window. Regards, |
