Help me figure out my horn wiring. Missing something?
 

I just got a horn button for my Raid racemark wheel. It was very hard to find because it is a different size (larger dia) than the MOMO. I went to install it, and then got confused.

So I tear apart my steering column to figure out the wiring and how to install this horn button. There is this copper (or brass?) ring that, when I touch to the spline, honks the horn. Great, my horn works! I know that the horn button grounds to the hub, which is attached to the spline/ rest of the chassis. My hub has a hole in it that looks like is for the horn button wire to pass through from the steering wheel, to behind the hub. Where do I attach the wire from the horn button?

Now on the back of the hub are two threaded holes. These holes fit the same screws used to hold the copper (brass?) ring in the steering column. Is there supposed to be another copper (brass?) ring that attaches to the hub as well? This would make sense because I could attach the horn wire to this, and the ring on the hub would rub against the ring in the steering column allowing the wheel to turn freely while keeping the circuit closed.

I just flattened the end and tucked it under the adapter ring before I bolted the wheel on. As long as you already have the 'hot' wire, the other one just needs to go to a ground to complete the circuit when you press the horn button.

My question is where to attach the hot wire.

The wire attached to the cancel/horn ring threaded up through the hub adapter should attach to the horn button "hot" wire. The other side of the circuit is through the hub to the wheel itself. Pressing the horn button completes the circuit. The spring loop on the horn button should be in contact with the wheel. -J

I don't have a wire coming from the horn ring. The horn ring is stationary, so if I attach a wire to it, won't it get all tangled up when I turn the wheel?

There should be a brown wire coming through the center of the horn ring with a slip connector that attaches to the horn button. If you touch this brown wire to the horn ring you will make a loud noise if all is correct.

Digging up an old thread, Procan never got a good answer! I have the same problem with the Momo wheel on my 914.. My guess is the ground is the problem, the hub does not create a very good ground since it is anodized or painted black .. I must look into this and get back to you.Make sure the copper spring on the horn makes good contact with the metal ring spacer that holds the horn button to the hub.

I ended up figuring it all out. There is a spring loaded piece that attaches to the hub and rubs against the copper ring. Luckily I had it laying around from another steering wheel I had but never installed.

Can you post a picture of the spring loaded piece?

Yes, that is what I was missing and then found on another steering wheel I had laying around. It works now. There is a wire attached to one end that attaches to the back of the horn button.
