a real engine teaser....

I was draining the oil out of my 3.2 today and I found this stuck to the magnet on the oil drain, any idea what this is and where it came from?

Here is photo of it next to my key so you can get some scale

Should have named the thread "Holy $hit! Look what I found!"
That's what I would have thought if it came out of my engine. I don't know what it is but I'm sure a lot of the guys will. I hope it's not serous. Good luck!

Chains been making any extra noise recently???

Never had the check valve out or apart, but that looks like what might come out of one of your pressure-fed chain tensioners ... to me!

Isn't that part of an oil squirter thingy from inside the engine block ??

and the winner is.....Early_S_Man

my car rolled backwards off the trailer in gear yesterday and popped the oil fed chain tensioners.

So new ones are on order, and I'm headed to the garage to pull out the old ones.

I took a quick drive into San Jose, CA, and stopped in at Jerry Woods to see if they could ID the part for me, and without hesitation they knew. Seems they have seen it a few times before. Thank heavens for the experts in this world, Jerry and Early_S_Man.

So it is a good lesson for all, if you see one of these in your oil...change your tensioners. Kurt at JWE said I should change both and took the time out to show me how, not too hard. Those guys are great and I recommend them to anyone who needs work done.

Thanks

Jim

And here I thought it was a microadjustable digital spring with inertia damping. :D

I think it may be Porsche's new interia dampening tooth insert. Lost a molar? Tired of sore jawboes? Try our power pressure sensing tooth inserts. Just $99.99 at Pelican Parts.

but wait the mystery is not over....

I pulled my tensioners, and I have both my check valves....so who's is this? I suggest you all better check yours since I clearly have three and should only have two...someone out there is missing one.

I know my motor has been apart, and "rebuilt" so it is likely that it snuck in there during the rebuild, or more likely was left there after the lsat time someone popped the tensioner.

never can be too careful....

thanks again....

Jim

Thanks to the good ol' magnetic drain plug!!

Roland Kunz 07-21-2002 10:36 AM

Hello

Leftovers in the enginesump are not direct dangeriuos. Leftovers in the oiltank are potential killers as there is no filteringdevice on the suction side. Thats why the magnetic oilplug is on the oiltank.
