Period specific, yes.
Model specific, yes...an IROC can pull off anything.
Condition specific yes, any factory color painted well and fresh looks nice. Old and tatty doesn't help an odd colour.

The worst I've ever seen was a 964 tip driven by the Corel boss' wife. Dark pink on a 1990 car with no hints of the 70s is bad.

I know people love guards red but lets be honest, Ferrari owns red, I loved it when they came out with the bright green GT3RS a couple years back, on the color wheel, green is opposite of red. Not sure if this was intended., but it was awesome.

Take a beautiful woman. Put her in any coloured dress (no stripes or dots) and she is still beautiful. Even if the dress is ripped or faded.
She of course will complain it's "just not this year" whatever colour you like

Likely a factory colour:

Porsche used some, ahem, unfortunate colours during the 964 era...

Hey, I like it...and I've seen purple(ish) that look great to. Personally, I have a black car (not the most practical colour) which I've come to both love and hate. Looks great when it's clean. Which is almost never is, since my acreage has an unpaved driveway. Many of the seventies interiors though.......you can only appreciate the collective madness that must've permeated the interior dept. at that time. That yellow/yellow one in front of the Porsche museum, "the goggles, they do nothing"...yikes. Cheers

I would probably never kick a 911 out of my garage based on its (originally available that year) exterior color. I don't prefer speed yellow or guards red (great colors but not for me), but would rather have one of those instead of no 911.

The interior, however, is another story. I don't understand what's going on inside some otherwise great cars over the years, both past and present.

While my Platinum Metallic SC with a Brown leather interior is not the most Glam color, it does give me a certain anonymity going down the highway. It does seem to keep the law at bay. And that is a very good thing...

This thread is like a radio call-in talk show. Of course it is entirely subjective, but people love to present their opinions. Oddly, the original question was what was the worst color, not the best, but the ensuing confusion is normal for a talk show I suppose.

I wrote a post on my blog (address below) called "The Power of Color" where I tried to offer a few ideas on color in general, and Porsches in particular.

I've followed this thread for a few days with interest. Personally, in my mind, I find it difficult to imagine a "worst color" for these cars. For some reason, you could paint these cars in just about any color imaginable, and it just seems to work. Let's face it, the lines of these cars even make browns look fantastic. I'm a huge Cocoa and Sepia fan.

OK, I haven't seen Pepto Bismol Pink on one yet. But who's to say it wouldn't work?

I've always liked Guards Red. But it's also the most common color, which doesn't make it bad.

A lot of people seem to dislike Aubergine, but just as many people love it. Count me in as the latter. Either you love it or hate it, kind of like the Rap Music of Porsche paint schemes.

When I started looking at purchasing a 911, I saw a beautiful example of a Carrera in Granite Green Metallic with tan interior. It was low mileage, in excellent shape, for a heckuva asking price. But I could not get past the color. Not ugly, but....I just can't quite put my finger on it. I wouldn't have been happy with it the rest of my life, so I passed on it for an ugly Dunkel Blau.

So, here's my vote for Granite Green Metallic.

Cool

I believe Sepia Brown is a great color, because simply, its original! Some find it hard to believe that Dr. Porsche came up with the color and favored it so much his personal 928 was painted in Sepia Brown. Back in the early 70's when the rainbow colors were popular and you wanted something more conservative but not black, Sepia was the way to go.

Bob
1973.5T in Sepia of course

That's it except it was a convertible with a full pink interior too (which just adds to it). A brighter light pink works on an older car, maybe mid-year impact or late longhood from the 70s, or something a little goofey like a Cadillac or Beetle but that monochromatic dark pink is brutal on those cars.

What is the name of the second car's colour?

I've never been a fan of Chiffon either unless its a perfect 65 or 66 and an old German man is driving on a country road. But I wouldn't say its the worst.

Originally my car was painted Gazelle Metallic, a 1974 color.

Anyone have a picture of that color?

The worst car color combo I have ever seen was a 1999 996 Cabriolet:

-Speed Yellow Exterior
-nephertiti green top!
-Wheels in Speed Yellow
-Nephertiti green full leather
- Speed Yellow console
- Hardback sport seats w/backs painted Speed Yellow
- yellow deviated stitch
- yellow dials
- Full makassar wood package

I didn't even know what to say when I saw it. Most loaded 996 I have ever see , it had like $50k in exclusive options ordered new in South Beach...
Now, where do you resell that???
