1977 911S; What kind of trailing arm do I have?

Hi,

Trying to determine what kind of trailing arm I have? The 77 "S" came with Turbo brakes and struts, but what about the trailing arms?

Thanks for any help!

The same aluminum banana arms any 911 came with. They started using this style of arm in 1974.

Uhh, not exactly. Nothing special about the brakes on a '77.

There are 2 varieties of sway bar mounts - ball and the later bolt on. Not sure when the transition occurred - I think in '78 when the SC came about. CV joints are different too - went to 6 bolt rather than 4 bolt and 2 pins each.

I do believe you are correct about that.

Thanks for the replies.

My understanding is that the 77 "s" did come with the aluminum calipers, but not all had them, not sure why.

I think you'll find that a '77 911 came with cast iron front calipers. They all had iron rear calipers. When the turbo was introduced in 1975, it used the aluminum calipers on the front.

There is some info in some of the books written about the 911 that is incorrect.

The aluminum calipers were hit or miss. Only on S models, but not all. Not sure if it related to strut type (Bilstein, Boge, etc). Eric Shea @ PMB may know the specifics. My '74 had them, but I switched to the iron SC units as they stop better.

Type 1 rear sways up to '77, SC and later use Type 2 sways.

Oh, and the ARB console, clamps and bushings are different too.

Pretty sure that change (from 4 M10 bolts and 2 pins to 6 M8 bolts) was earlier ('74?); my '77 had the relatively puny 6 bolt flanges and stub axles.

Not exactly. The 77 930 didn't come with what are generally regarded as "turbo" brakes (although it was the first 930 year that got a brake servo, like the N/A cars did that year) - the first year for the 917-derived 930 brakes was the next year, 1978.

'77 was a change-over or one-year-only thing in quite a few ways. Also the first year you're guaranteed to have a fully-galvanised body (as they hadn't used up all the non-galvanized roof panels until somewhere into the '76 model year...
