Exhaust chokes me at a stop light

86 3.2 has SW chip, pre muffler in place of cat. Pre muffler has bung hole for O2 sensor placed nicely just past the Y. Smells very rich fuel mix to me. After doing the usual searches I went ahead and ordered a new O2 sensor (bosch original replacement). When I put that in hopefully my troubles will go away. Is there a way to check the air fuel ratio and CO. I saw gauges for the AFR that mount in the car, I would rather have something portable to use, is this something that can be purchased as a hand held type instrument? Should I check AFR after I install the new O2 sensor and is there a base line I should be looking for at idle and operating temp? Engine still runs great, maybe just a slight bit slower, burns very little oil.

I have a second O2 sensor bung for a exhaust gas meter. I use an LM-1 in the second bung, and leave the system in closed loop to check the O2 sensor functionality. If at some point you installed a 3-wire universal O2 sensor, then make sure that the wire crimps are still good. You can't solder the wires reliably, you have to go with crimps.

If you remove the O2 sensor to adjust the CO mixture, be sure to unplug the O2 sensor so the system is running in open loop.

I would get an O2 instrument. I recommend the Daytona Sensors Wego IV, but I am biased. Have one and love it. Best value for the money. And it records 2 hours of running for later analysis. I do have mine permanently installed and it to me is the way to go.

Does it have its own power (batteries) or will I need to hook it up to cars 12V. Looking for something portable and temporary. So your saying yes to test and adjust it manually to aid the brain in adjusting the AFR.

You have to supply 12 vdc which could be from a cigarette lighter. Also a good idea to hook up to the purple tach wire behind the instrument [very easy to get to] so you have RPM on the charts. The kit comes with a bung to weld into the exhaust or you can use a sniffer at the end. I l like the bung. when you are done you can put a plug in the bung.

Pelican does sell the Wego iv from Daytona.

I seem to remember reading through my search results and board member DRACO ? used a digital multimeter to measure output ? I would prefer something that had a sniffer that attaches to the tail pipe so I could use it on other engines. Still my question is do I need to check or adjust it after installing new O2 sensor. Don't need any extra gadgets installed in my car.

AFR is best measured with a meter.....they are reasonable in price. BUT....I would talk to SW first......

Janz,
I have a LM-1 that is portable to check your CO / AFR %. I live @ the end of I-495 no need to go over the bridge.
