Trouble filling the gas tank

87 with all the hoses new, no gas smells when topped off etc, BUT, is there a trick to filling the tank? The nozzle will click off if I try to fill the tank any faster than about half speed. Very annoying. I was thinking its the restrictor, so then older (pre 74 ?) cars without the restrictor, can be filled at full nozzle delivery?
George

Try turning the fill nozzle 180 degrees as you top off.

Turn 180 degrees as noted above. Try not to fill it too full, you'll just end up overflowing and/or backing fuel into the vapor recovery system.....

DO NOT TOP IT OFF!

That can screw up the evaporative control system. (That's true of any car, not just Pcar.)

Works fine if you don't push the nozzle all the way in. Pull it out an inch or two when you fill, don't need to turn it upside down. Turning upside-down (180 deg) can defeat the auto shut off. When it clicks, don't put any more in.

The auto shut off is controlled by the little hole in the bottom of the nozzle; if it's on top, it may not work... gasoline everywhere.

+1 Pull it an inch or two. This was the start of my many adventures as a new PCar owner. I got it from the Porsche dealership with almost 1/4 gas left. Had to drive it home for a good 70 miles. Drove to the nearest BP station and couldn't figure out why I can't fill up as nozzle stops every 2 secs. Got on my Iphone search thru Pelican and found similar thread so I lifted the nozzle up and got the tank full.

Pulling the nozzle out an inch or two does not work on my '81. I have to turn it 180 to be able to fill reasonably smoothly.

Like in DUK's photo above... you point the nozzle the same direction as the inside pipe. And yes it will click/shut off when the fuel gets to the top.... but you should shut it off just before you hear it coming up the spout.

Top off tank, go out on the track at the home track BIR - high speed banked turn one driven at 120 - 145 (what ever your car will do) centrifugal force -fuel leaks out the overfill - lubricates the drivers side rear tire...way too much fun...getting the car to straighten back out. You'll never overfill the tank again.
