Exhaust options besides SSI
So with a 2.7, will 3.0 or 3.2 exhausts fit?
So I have a 77 2.7, going to rebuild the motor this winter. However, I want to drive it all summer, and the exhaust note is just... boring. I have read that SSI is obviously the best, but what other options are there? I'm going to need both heat exchangers and the muffler... but I'm open to alternatives. I've also seen people run headers with some sort of homemade heat exchanger as well. What's available? Also, if there is a massive 911 FAQ that lists aftermarket options for everything, that would be great. So with a 2.7, will 3.0 or 3.2 exhausts fit? The SSI simply copied (in stainless) the 2in/2out design that the factory used before emissions issues forced porsche to route the exhaust through a single catalytic converter.
For engines below 3.2 liters that aren't highly modified, the ssi/factory design seems to provide close to optimal exhaust flow. What's holding you back from going the ssi route? If price, you could try and track down the old style factory 2in 2out setup, which would likely be cheaper than the ssi setup. Switching from the single inlet muffler used on your stock system to a dual inlet muffler used by the ssi/old style system will fundamentally "shake up" your exhaust note and opens up a HUGE number of muffler options too. I like the SSis, I was just seeing what else is out there. I noticed that there are some really cheap headers on ebay, but they don't have heat exchangers.

I've got some RarlyL8's that I'm thinking of selling. They are not optimal for carb'd motors.

Cash,
I replaced my 2.7 with a 3.0, and I reused my SSI's I had on the 2.7. So I would say they should fit. But I think there is an issue with the flange thickness wher it meets the head. One is a thicker flange than the other. Not sure what they did to mine to make it work, but it does. Maybe just longer or shorter exhaust studs... Craig

exhaust system
It all depends on your budget...
I did my due diligence by reading various options for my 1987 3.2 carrera. SSI was too small for the 3.2 and I wanted to have a free flow system that will add a few HP'S, especially added torque, great sound, not too loud, but sporty and Stainless steel. I got a 100 cell catalytic converter and matched it with a MONTY muffler 1 in 1 out. The cat is NHP from Canada and the muffler is from Australia ( specialist in Porsche 911 for the last 30 years) The result with the added Steve wong chip is just amazing! not cheap but the best! |

I was thinking about going with a pair of 993 heat exchangers and a 2in/2out muffler of some sort. This require backdating the heat and those pieces will be needed as well.

So if I bought a pair of 3.0 or 3.2 exhausts, would they fit my 2.7?

the factory 3.0 and 3.2 headers bring all the exhaust gasses to a single catalytic converter. I suspect they'll fit, but will likely not give you any more power or better sound.

I don't know about the 3.0, but the 3.2 will not work.
