1976 911 Rebuild Nightmare
Hello Pelicans. I have lurked for quite a while after first getting this car, but I have just started to work on it and thought I should have you join in on the insanity and hopefully add some sage knowledge and advice. This car was given to me by a regular customer of mine, Charlie, at the restaurant I managed. We used to sit around and talk cars and about our projects and stuff. He always had some thing odd going on. He had a Pulse Lighstar and was building a '74 Mercedes with a ford V8 in it. Charlie died late last year while I was off going to school to start a new career. After I graduated his wife called me and said she needed to talk to me. I had been with Charlie to see his collection and saw a 911 sitting off in the corner of his property but never talked to him about much because I knew he never sold off the cars he had. So long story short Charlie's wife said that he had wanted me to have his 911 because he knew I was a car guy like him and would be able to finish his started Project.
Here is the car from the first time I saw it several years ago: ![]() IMG_0586 by Mr.Sparkitle, on Flickr Yes the car had a terrible fiberglass front bumper on it with that ugly box on the front. More on that later. So as the car sat it was rather stripped. The car was parked up there after getting painted slate grey. It had some bits inside, but nothing much else. ![]() IMG_0590 by Mr.Sparkitle, on Flickr So i knew that Charlie was a bit of an odd ball and he liked fast cars and cars that were as odd as he was, so when I walked to the back I wasn't really surprised by what greeted me: ![]() IMG_0588 by Mr.Sparkitle, on Flickr Well yes that is a chevy SBC sitting in the car. Once I took the car back to my parents house where there was room to tear into it, and where my wife wouldn't kill me from bringing it home I started to find all types of goodies. The motor was set up with a Renegade Hybrid motor mount kit. I dropped the trans and motor to get a look at what I was dealing with. The trans I dropped out of the car says that it is out of a 930 turbo. So at this point I had a shell of a 911 with an sbc and that was about it. Then Charlie's wife asked me to help her clear out all of his stuff and help he get the estate in order. These people had been very good to my wife and I over the years, it was the least I could do. After some time of helping her sell off some of the odd ball cars and tools and what not I started to find parts. So this is kind of where I am starting at. I have a stripped car, with a garage full of loose parts and odds and ends, that should add up to a whole 911. For now I am going to get it back together as much as I can before I sort out what to do with the motor. I have a brand new 383 sitting in my garage, but not sure if I want to go that route. This was one of my most exciting finds, yes both sides are there: ![]() IMG_0976 by Mr.Sparkitle, on Flickr And then one of the more WTF finds. This was all in a box labeled '76: ![]() IMG_0977 by Mr.Sparkitle, on Flickr Oh and here is what the Renegade Hybrid clutch set and motor mounts look like if any one is interested: ![]() IMG_0626 by Mr.Sparkitle, on Flickr ![]() IMG_0627 by Mr.Sparkitle, on Flickr Ok well that is enough babbling from me. I will keep you all updated on what is happening with the car. I am sure I will have questions to ask. |
