What does it take to replace a cut off Targa Bar , was hacked for cabrio conversion !

I found a 73 "cabrio" , OK its really a 73 Targa that had some back street hacking in the Miami Vice days.

So the targa bar was hacked off and a "cabrio" top frame installed ,

yes it has fiberglass slant nose fenders and a BIG whale tail too , but he saved the original parts :)

So has anyone welded back on the Targa bar ? Any pictures or Web links ?

I have not bought it yet so I cannot really see how the hack was done,

Thanks for your help.....

Save the Whales , let them keep their tails !

You might want to connect with haycalt; he's a body guy who focuses on 911's. He doesn't like Targas, and he owns an early Targa/ Cabrio conversion. I try to put up with his complete lack of respect he has for us...LOL. Don is good guy and would put you straight on what would be involved. He has a shop in Summerland BC, Canada and you can find his phone # in the regional (Canada) forum. I believe the thread is called "new shop in Summerland". Cheers

Patience. It's a worthy project for someone that wants it bad enough. The targa glass is so finicky to get back in correctly that you could easily screw it up. Or make it too loose. I wouldn't be able to do it I don't think.

Yeah, that would be a very difficult job, even if the hack was done halfway decently, which seems unlikely. The targa bar extends down into the rear quarter, which is part of what gives it its rigidity. Almost certainly it will have been cut off straight across the top of the quarter. In other words you'd either have to source a new bar (big $$$) and get into the quarter to remove the original remaining steel, or just do a largely cosmetic replacement, which would be extremely difficult to get right. As quattorunner notes, the fit of the rear window would not be very forgiving.

My 2 cents: wouldn't try it.

ummm well I do not see much "love" for this car these days with its Miami Vice look ,

But then I do not see a 911T targa as a big demand car , plus finding the top, targa bar and rear window will cost a few $$$$

might have to look around for the parts first before buying it......

Panorama has a good article this month on the creation of the 911 cab. Very interesting reading. I understand this is not what you are asking but in may give you an insight into what you have and why you should put the bar back.

Don't care for targa's either. I'm wondering if there is a way to take it to a coupe. I wonder that every time I see a decent targa for sale.

Southbay356 05-22-2013 05:29 PM

ummm not sure about the coupe conversion,

but can you now buy the parts to make it like the factory 911 Speedster ?

This is what I would do...

Turn it into a soft window targa! I bet the soft rear window is a lot more forgiving in placement of the bar than a full glass window.

I like this idea too

a fiberglass hardtop...

i agree with the others .. if you by it it would be expensive to return to stock ...

go the slant nose/cabrio hard top ... or weld a real top on ..

alot depends on your skills or wallet ....

the vice look may make a comeback .... actually I like the look ...

you also could sell the slant front and tail and recoup a bit ....

I guess I am no help ....

if you buy it .. its yours .. enjoy it because it is yours ....SmileWavy
