Weird 3rd Brake Light Question
I am eliminating the ET light from my '87 Carrera so I bought a glass mount factory 3rd Brake Light. It's new. I run the wiring, add a fancy extra plug so I can remove it and put in an LED version later if I decide to, measure, mark, measure again. Finally ready to stick the mounting frame on, but when I peel off the layer to expose the double-sided tape, it's white? The tape is white, not black. Did I miss something? Why would they use white tape, ever?
Help me solve this mystery. Now I have to find some black tape, cut it perfectly (a huge challenge for me) and add it to the light. Ugh. -- Matt |
That's what happens when the lowest bidder gets the contract to make parts. I want to bet the light is made by Valeo.

Here's the mount. The casting date was '85.

3M makes a dark gray almost black exterior molding mount tape. Usually available at autoparts stores.
It's very durable and thinner than many of the tapes available at hardware stores. Cooper |
I recently purchased a new rear window (with 3rd brake light) for my '74. The window I bought is for an '76 and it has black tint around the area where the 3rd brake light is mounted.
Naturally, I put the window in the closet for a future project and it's been there for 2 years :( |
I stand corrected. Did not think about the blacked out area.

Very strong stuff, and the adhesive lasts. However, I was able to get a black version from an auto windshield replacement shop. |
Didn't know about the blacked out area!

I would use black velcro.....glue one side the window one side to the fixture.....
