You can get an online quote from safelite.com. $630 for my AO. Likely Pilkington glass. I checked eight or so months ago locally and factory glass was between $800-900. I have an '86 but was considering updating to 993 glass. Tons of mark up on glass and prices can vary wildly. It pays to call around locally and get the best price and someone you are comfortable with to do the install. 993 has urethane set glass that's not really DIY friendly like older gasket windshields. -J

Not to hijack this, and not to ask a dumb question, but you can simply put 993 glass in place of the glass in a mid 80's 911?

Quote:
Outer opening should be same on all cars. Early cars up to some point in 89 are the same inside the opening. 964 cars have similar gasket glass but no trim strip and the flange around the inside of the window is larger to match the 964 glass. Flange is half to one cm larger, I can remember for sure. Some say 964 works in early cars just as many say no. 993 has larger flange like 964 but urethane set glass. Moulding goes on flange, urethane around the frame outside of that moulding, glass is set in. 993 glass has channel around the edge and a second moulding presses into channel to finish off the install. The 993 moulding is lower profile and consensus is quieter, not to mention should be leak free. So dropping a 993 glass into an older car takes an installer who has either done it or done enough custom work to get the urethane down just right. I had a local pro install a regular 911 w/s a few months ago and I talked to him about the 993 glass and what it would entail. This guy does a lot of custom work (one off glass for custom cars, etc.) and he said he thought it would be easier than installing the original gasket w/s. He'd do it for the price of the glass for the challenge. He's installed 6-10 windshields a day for 20 years so I figure he knows what he's doing. -J Good photos here. 993 windshield.

Got a price today of $675. Have to go for it I guess. Was told they are expensive
and hard to come by. My windshield is pretty good but is a bit milky in one corner and slight delamination in another corner. We wanted to take the w/s out to do a small repair to the body panel just below the w/s, and didn't want to take a chance breaking it and then having no replacement., Doing the right thing , right?? ![]() ![]() |
