solid core plug wires with MSD
 

I know MSD say that you can't use solid-core plug wires with their multi-spark ignition systems - but what is the effect if you do ?

I've got 2 x MSD 6AL + 2 x MSD (high vibration) Blaster II coils (fired by a Supertec twin-plug distributor) fitted to my 2.5 litre twin-plug engine.

The distributor came with solid-core plug wires & the engine runs perfectly with a steady idle - & there is no sign of any misfire anywhere in the rev range.

I don't have a radio (or any other superfluous electrical/electronic gizmos).

I've read all of the old threads on the topic & there seems to be split opinions ...

Supposedly, the lack of a resistor wire overdraws the coil causing excess heat. Seems it will run fine...until it doesn't. I've used MSD on many projects, but always used resistor wires, so I can't tell you if it is true or not. Glad to hear you have the high vibration coils as the regular MSD coils don't like any position, but up.

I had a 6AL with a Bosch coil and Magnecor wires for several years. I'm not saying you won't ever have a problem, but I never did.

Any other experience/comments ?

The recommendation for suppression wire has nothing to do with the coil(s). Its due to RFI/EMI issues that can cause high RPM misfires.

I've experienced this problem several times on customer's cars brought in with running problem. For this reason, we use suppression wires only, and no more problems.

Steve's right, as always. You need the right wires to avoid messing up the MSD operation. Had to do this on the race car when I added MSD.
