Anyone know which way this goes on steering shaft?

Replacing the rubber bushing and needle bearing in the smugglers box, which I got from the host. It is a little different than the old one, looks like one end has been improved with a rubber lip that is tight to the shaft. Problem is I am not sure which way it goes on, lip towards the steering rack to protect from dirt coming in from underneath I assume but not sure?

The end with the lip is a little shorter than the other end of the rubber bushing which, the open end is the same as the old one as you can see from the side view pic which lead me to think the longer end might go towards the rack since it would match the size of the old one going into the protective cone it sits in in the smuggler box, but I cant see the reason for the rubber lip on that end since there should not be any dirt inside the smugglers box.

Anyone who has done this know?

The lip faces up to prevent dirt from the trunk getting into the bearing.

Needle bearing

Where is there a needle bearing. I just did my steering box and when I removed my bushing I never saw one?

Was it a separate part?

Thanks

Really? What dirt is coming into it from inside of the closed smugglers box?
This guy looks like he has it in the other way around?
Steering Vibration damper removal

Can anyone else confirm?

I bought it as one part, needle bearing is inside the rubber piece that is clamp inside smugglers box.

Needle Bearings -

Hey Rebar, I installed the steering shaft support with the lip seal facing up simply to prevent any dirt or grit from (theoretically) falling into the internal needle bearings.

Like many owners, I'd like to take a moment to say thanks to everyone who participates in all the problem solving discussions found on this site. With this information I was able to sort out a long list of snags encountered while recently rebuilding the front end on my 87 911 - Frauhelga. After successfully reassembling the steering rack and replacing the ball joints, wheel bearings, bushings and turbo tie rods, I had run completely out of ideas when it came to pulling the cartridges out of the front struts. Eventually I found where someone suggested using a bottle jack. With the nut and an over sized steel washer mounted to the top of the the cartridge and a block of wood between the tie rod arm of the strut and a 2x4 against the upper washer, I used a bottle jack to easily pull the cartridge out. A nylon strap was spiraled around the whole contraption to hold everything in place.

As always this is a great site for information....

Michael

I agree Michael, so much hassle saved with these contributions. Thanks for the confirmation.

Replacing the struts and rear shocks is next on my list, so good to know. I didn't realize there was a problem getting them to come out.
