Replacing my clutch helper spring

My 27 year old "omega" clutch helper spring gave out on Saturday and in the process of removing it I realized I've got one of the throw out arms that has the cotter pin that has to be punched out in order to remove it. Yippee, more work.

After a bit of wrestling and finding the right punch to hammer the pin out if find this on the floor of my garage right where I was.

It doesn't look like a Porsche part, it's made of aluminum, about 3/4 of an inch long. It's some type of retaining clip but I've got no clue where it came from. More importantly I'd like to find if it's something I'm going to regret not trying to find out where/what it goes back into or if it's just a scrap piece that fell into the engine bay years ago.

Thanks in advance.

that is from a tool, probably snap ring pliers.

ding ding ding ding! that's the right call. I feel kind of stupid now. As soon as I read your response I realized that it had come from the circlip pliers I'd used while taking them out.

thanks again.
