Finally! The Prize is in Sight!!

My on going Chain Tensioner saga....sigh

Has taken me nearly 12 hrs to remove mufflers, AC, and air pump (Murphy was helping me, one word describes....unbelivable! Amazing what 20 years of rust does)...but, by god, I did it and the covers over the chain tensioners are visable and asessable. I removed the cover from the passenger side (I won't be able to start the upgrade until Sat, but I just wanted a look at the prize), ok, I guess all looks good...but those chain ramps. Tell me again why I need to replace those. Tell me the life of the engine is at stake if I don't replace them. Tell me that this is the second most important thing I can do for this engine! I looked at those ramps....felt the tension on the chain at the "visable" ramp. It's tight! No way is that thing moving. I figured out where the "missing" ramps are...does contortionist bring a picture! I'm sorry, I'm nearly 6-5...my hands are not fitting anywhere near that little hole! The ramps are all in one piece, if I upgrade the chain tensioners and leave the old ramps,...is that a sin????

Next question. Drivers side. I need to remove the distributor. Once again, as I said in the past...I'm not the sharpest tack. This doesn't mean just the cap...it means the whole long shaft ... the WHOLE enchilada right. Remove the bolt holding it inplace for timing the it just pulls out? Stupid question I know, but am I in the ball park?

thanks...signed

Yes, it just pulls out after removing that timing nut and perhaps a vacuum line. Note- get in there with some brake cleaner and really blast out that area where the diz pulls out. This will prevent some 20 yr. old crud from dropping into your case.

Thanks Dave -- really like the idea of blasting the area with chemtool! Your right, the way this has gone...it's not a case of might...it will fall in!

I'll say it for Wayne.
This project is covered in depth in the "101 Projects for Your Porsche" which can be purchased here at Pelican Parts! It would answer all of your questions above - and any others you're likely to have.

Rob,

Unless you like the idea of doing all of the same work again in a few weeks or months ... just go ahead and do the ramps, now!

Robert can probably tell you better than I can what the sights and sounds of a set of disintegrated chain ramps are like ...

NO, you don't have to remove the distributor to replace the chain ramps ... what you do have to do is jack up the engine and support it on wooden blocks , or a very short jack stand ... and remove the rear engine mount 'console.' Then the four sholder bolts that locate the inner four chain ramps can be easily removed.

I think the reason for removing the distributor is to get to the left side cam oil line. Make sure the engine is at Z1, with the rotor pointing at the #1 plug wire, so you can put it back in the same way as it came out.

Tom I think you're right. Was following the directions in the 101 and it says remove the distributor...for access to the left side cam oil line. I can see the nut behind the distributor, can also see it might be a challenge to remove it without removing the distributor.

Chain ramps...sigh....disintegrating chain ramps......I'm a woos and lazy at that...I admit. Guess I'll take 'er slow and enjoy the moment. I know the worse day working on your 911 is better than the best day working, but driving her is even better!

Actually found a good procedure in the archives last night for chain ramps, will be using it too. Question though, it does say remove the passenger side tensioner ro gain access to the lover inner ramp. I can see that, but the recent warnings have been fairly explicit...do not remove the tensioners and the ramps at the same time. Question, can you remove the lower inner ramp without removing the tensioner. Anyone done that?

thanks all!

Yeah Warren, the noise of the missing chain ramp is almost as bad as the sight of the chain ramp chunks in the sump screen.
