Alternator reinstall mistake
I made a mistake while reinstalling my internally regulated alternator into my 9146 conversion car. While tightening the B+ connector on the back of the alt. my socket wrench handle touched the top of the engine case...I quick spark flashed...I then noticed that I had forgotten to disconnect the ground from the battery...this was a dumbass move on my part. I went into the cabin and turned the key to the accessory position and watched to see if the generator light on the combo gauge iluminated and it did. My gauge came out of a 911 and has temp on the left side, druck press on the right, oil warning light at the top and +- generator light at the bottom. Do you think I will be good to go or could that spark have damaged any components?

I think you will be fine. The spark was battery voltage and we've all been there at some point.

Good reminder to unhook your battery while doing this... I was working on a truck Friday and did the same thing...

Hi Cheney, wondering if the picture shows your final connections? I don't see
the ground from the harness connected to the back of the alternator? I'm replacing my alternator tomorrow and just looking for confirmation that I have at least half a clue as to what I'm doing. Half a clue may be generous. Do you have a pic of your alternator with everything attached? Also,..you say you're reinstalling,....when you initially installed this alternator,...how did you deal with the external regulator. Sorry to get you sidetracked, but I can't seem to find any specifics except that I should "disconnect" the external regulator. THANKS Rich |
Alternator
The voltage regulator on the alternator is internal. All connections have been made and are shown in the picture. I will disconnect and install the fan vane cover onto the back of the Alternator before completing.

Pelican has a link to the (2 page) technical bulletin covering the upgrade from the external regulator to an alternator with an internal regulator on this page:
Porsche 911 & Carrera Charging System - Page 1 The pictures are a bit poor but the upgrade is pretty straightforward. Good luck. |
