Porsche Crest Removing engine pan

My engine pan is still in place and in light of a recent post as well as several other sources I am going to remove it. Has anyone done this?

Bruce Anderson made this issue (removing the pan) famous in his Excellence Magazine tech column. He recommended owners to remove them to allow better engine cooling. Porsche (of course) officially disagreed with Mr. Anderson.

Yes, it comes out in 5 seconds. Something like 5 speed screws. I don't know if it helps anything, seems like alot of hoopla anyway.

Read IZZY's PPI thread of today. All that oil accumulated is a fire hazard.

I think BA also related, although speculative, premature valve stem guide wear to the accumulation of heat in the heads because of the pan. It's probably just to protect the engine from debrie.

I would take it off.

Paul,

That's why I wrote this thread. Although those problems were based on a 964. My reaserch, which is still ongoing, has shown no issues with the 993 as of yet. It appears to be a matter of opinion at this point. I am going to take it off, even if its to have a look.

Brian, It's definitely a matter of opinion, like so many technical issues. Doesn't mean that the opinion isn't valid, though. I seem to recall that B.A. recommends removing it from 993s as well. It's just logical that hot air would not escape from bottom as well. Bottom is the hot part, you should also get a lot better air flow over exhaust/bottom, IMO.
