Start position on ignition switch just went

Hi guys - the start position of my ignition switch just broke. The AUX and run positions work fine.

From doing some researching here it appears this is most likely the mechanical bits, not the electrical components? That means if I want to fix it the whole assembly needs to come out? Does that sound right?

Thanks in advance.

Typically, if the mechanical part breaks the AUX and run positions won't engage because the "pin" that moves the electrical portion into position is broken. Since your electrical portion does work, at least in two positions (three including "off"), it sounds like the electrical portion is broken. This portion also includes the spring return that snaps the key back to "run" after "start" is used.

Now, here's the thing. Removing the electrical portion without removing the entire assembly is a real PITA. It can be done, but it is much easier to remove the entire assembly, so you're likely to face the same initial procedure. The bright side is, the electrical assembly is an easy and cheap repair, once the assembly is out.

Ah, well that is partially encouraging. The part is 40 years old so hard to be too upset.

Thanks
