Boone NC to Plaquemine LA and back.
Going to make a quick 2.5 day, 1700 mile trip for business and going to take the 87. I put the AC belt back on so if req., I can get some dehumidifying. I truly enjoy driving the car so I'm looking forward to all but the trip around Atlanta. Anyone know a good place for Cajun food in Baton Rouge/Placquemine ?
I'll cross my fingers and take a few photos if anything interesting happens. Won't post till I return. Leaving Wed. at first light, my wife just rolls her eyes, glad she won't be in the car complaining.

Re-Route Question
Any input on going I-85 down to Alabama or shifting the route west and going via Knoxville, Meridian ? Same miles, maybe avoid Atlanta. Looks a tad hotter more inland. No idea on the highways west GA and south of TN. If I go west from Boone, at least I get to start with some nice cool twisty roads before I get to I-81 south.

Or, for somewhere totally unexpected, try the fried catfish and peach cobbler from Mathern's Grocery, also in Baton Rouge. Both are outta sight!

Don's is not far off I-10 so thats good if I can just get there early enough. Found someplace called Rice and Roux (??) not far away. I just want some regional Jambalaya or Crawdads and beer after a long drive. I'll check out Matherns Grocery, maybe on Day 2 on my way home. Not sure about catfish and peach cobbler but I love me some peach cobbler !

I can't comment on food stops- been too long since I've been through there, but the Knoxville, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Meridian, New Orleans route is not a bad way to go if you're doing mostly interstate. The Meridian to New Orleans segment is pretty dull, nothing but pine trees for hours on end, but the rest of the route isn't bad. Whether it's south Mississippi, south Alabama or south Georgia, it's not the most scenic drive (at least I haven't found one), but at least this way you get to avoid Atlanta.

Hey... when are you going? [edit: you said Wednesday -- like tomorrow?] I'm headed from New Orleans to Maggie Valley and back next week (not in the 911) and will hit Blowing Rock/Boone later in the summer. I'll can let you know what the roads are like. It's generally 6 or half dozen going through Birmingham or Montgomery. Hard to avoid Atlanta. But unless you hit it at the wrong time, Atlanta's not so bad. Quicker than trying to avoid it. I think the route through Elizabethton is longer.

Don's ain't bad but it's a chain. If you want a truer Cajun experience and great food you need to hit Boutin's. Boutin's Restaurant - "A Cajun Music & Dining Experience!"
Stop by Jerry Lee's for the best boudin on the planet. Made fresh daily. The head cheese is pretty good, too. The place is cash and carry. There is no seating. Jerry Lee's Cajun Foods | "if it's not Jerry Lee's It's not Boudin" -J

My Plaquemine-descended brother-in-law says for Plaquemine: There's Fat Daddy's for light sandwiches and salads, and Guidry's which is across from St. John church on Hwy. 1. Brusly has a place called Bayou Bistro. In BR there's Acme Oyster House at I-10 and Acadian, and behind that there's Parrains which has more cajun food.

Bergerons Grocery in Addis has good boudin and isn't far from Plaquemine. Also agree that unless you go to original Dons on Airline I would avoid the others. My choice would be Galatiors, Mansurs or Jubans. For crawfish go to Tonys Seafood and pick up 5 lbs or to sit and eat go to Sammy's.
Jerry Lees is the best boudin but its a trek |

Shawn, he is going to Plaquemines Parish. Why not give him a list of the great food in the C.C. You got to go thru the C.C. to get to Plaq. Parish.

Howard, I read it as the town of Plaquemine (on Hwy 1 b/t Port Allen and White Castle/Donaldsonville). Jesse16, lemme know if you're going to spend time in New Orleans. Also you may want to consider the Meridian route and stop to meet Howard Freeman of this thread's fame; Found 30 Years Later.

Don's? Oh man, blue hair supreme...USED to be good (up through the late 70's, but went south just like Ralph & Kacoo's). Thank goodness they closed the Don's up here.
