Fill front oil cooler before fitting hoses?

Hi

'88 3.2, have the front oiler cooler out to change flex lines and replace broken mount, given it a good clean out etc,.

Should I fill the cooler with oil as I fit it up, or let the oil flow from the engine after that oil is changed.

The main concern is that it doesn't get that hot here and it may be some time before the thermostat opens and takes oil from the main tank, and the lines and cooler must hold 2 liters or more at a guess.

Or put oil up to the mark, and take it for a damn good thrash to make sure the thermosat has opened, then refil

Opinions?

Just leave it empty, it will purge itself. Change oil add 8-9 quarts drive slowly until thermo opens, top up. You can't get a good measurement until the thermo opens.

IMHO - - -

Six of one and half a dozen of the other . . .

Sooner or later you will want to get an accurate oil level measurement, so why not
now- - - hard driving will heat it up . . .

Regards,
