Project complete! (pics)
I was amazed how well the '94 decklid mounted to my '83 so easily. Lid is level with even gaps.
I can't believe how much more stable the car is at speed. I really feel well planted to the road. Although this project was not difficult, I did manage to cut myself about a dozen times (standard for me). I wanted to be a mechanic as a kid but I think the blood bank thought it was too risky! Well, what do you think?

Looks good! I kinda like Targas without tails, but yours certainly doesn't look out of place.

Nice.
What did you use to attach the rubber gasket to the tail? I just took mine off and the rubber gasket fell off the tail. Now I need to re-attach it before I put it back on. Any suggestions?

I used a TINY bit of spray adhesive. (3M)
That is only needed for alignment. The bolts will hold the gasket securely in place. The original gasket was in such bad shape, I bought a new one. Made the job much easier. I had the tail and decklid painted separately before assembly. The edge of the decklid had an enormous number of small dings. Thank heaven for bondo. For some reason, I still don't trust myself with auto paint!

How did you attach the 911SC badge?

I'm lazy and didn't trust myself to drill 7 holes in the decklid. I cut off the posts, ground them down, then mounted the badge with two-sided automotive sticky tape.

3M adhesive. That will work.
Where did you get a new gasket? I checked on Pelican Parts, but have not found one. I could use a new gasket. Also, my deck has bent due to the forces put on the hinges by the whale tail. It's not a big deal with the whale tail attached, but after I took it off, you could easily see the mis-alignment. You might want to look into bracing the deck somehow.

Moses--
Nice, beautiful job. IMO, Targas with tails are the most beautiful of all Porsches (except for the 959). You need a vanity tag though. How about "SLVRSTRK"? Razor-- The PO had installed the tail on mine without the gasket, but had two rolls of the stuff in the trunk. I've redone mine and used black silicone rubber adhesive to attach the gasket to the tail. I may have enough gasket left to do another tail. You can have it if you need it. Trim the width with a razor knife before you put it on and it will be easier to negotiate the corners. LMK.

I'm pretty sure I got the gasket at Pelican. Not sure, though.

Steve,
I'm not sure I would recommend my paint shop. Quality is good, but the price always increases after the bid. In the future, I think I will use Cooks Collision in Walnut Creek.

Moses,
I'm at the point of having the used tail and decklid I purchased painted. Both need some relatively minor prep work prior to spray. I've got quotes ranging from $400 to over $900. Care to share what you paid?

Ha ha ha, project complete. On my cars I have found that it is never complete, there is always something else to do.
BTW, has anyone ever looking into using the fender bead trim off of a VW bug for the whale tail seal? When I put the whale tail on my car I noticed that the seal looked very much like that on the bug fenders, but I didn't have one to compare to. If they are close, then all it would take is a pair of scissors to save some money. The bug seals are plentiful and cheap. |

I clean the rims with MOTHERS. A truly amazing product. After cleaning them, I put on a THIN coat of Vaseline.
Oh, I did the bondo work myself. Painting the decklid and tail was $500. Install was a PITA, but it's done.

If anyone knows where to get that gasket (mine is partially slid under my decklid on the passenger side at the corner up nearest the rear window) I would like to put a new one on my car.
Is it hard to remove the tail to replace the gasket???
