time to dig into the wiring
 

while waiting on my wastegate for my 86 930, i thought i would jump on some of the smaller things that need attention, like the brakes. NOT. with the condensor up front i am going to have to figure out a better way to jack it up. so on to checking out the wiring.

there was a small fire up front in the fan for the fron t condensor, so i pulled that out and cleaned it up. i had a spare fan that needed some attention, but that turned out to be a bust. in the pic you can see one good brush and one that melted.
preventive maint tip:
pull your fans out and make sure they turn freely. then take some 600 grit paper and clean the part that the brushes ride on. this can extend the life of your fans AND prevent your car from burning to the ground.

since that was a bust i thught i would check out the fuse block and wiring to see the condition of it. i must say, this car has a pretty unmolested wiring system, except for the switch under the sterring colum. more on that later.
even though it is unmolested i am surprised these cars dont have more fires than they do.
i found several wires that looked like they had been bent 180 degrees and squeezed tightly. one even had some breaks in the insulation. in the pic, you can see the break inthe green wire and the "lumps" and white spots from the bends.
other than that, every thing looked good.
i am planning on putting the fuel pumps on seperate fuses, and BTW, one of the "bad" wires was the high current fuel pump wire. NOT good.

on to the switch. SOME PEOPLE SHOULD NOT OWN CARS LIKE THIS!
I dont get it. they spend money on engine parts but go and splice in a switch into the windshield wiper circuit that for all i can tell so far, MAY provide power for the low setting of the wiper. if the swtich is off, the low setting does not work and they do not park. will investigate more later.

i do have a little drain on the battery, something in the interior lights. i will check that more later too.

i need a front condensor fan BTW.

the red wire is to the FP's.
the green wire on the right has a break in it and the other one has had a bad bend in it.

Good job! Going through the electrical is tedious work. The PO of my car thought there was an electrical problem. What he thought was a series of related issues was really 3 independent issues: fried turn signal stalk, bad turn signal relay and mechanical failure of the ignition switch. When I bought the car it came with a flat blade screwdriver to start it!

The wiring under the dash was a rat's nest. It's a wonder something didn't short out. I am a big fan of the headlight relays and fusing the instrument panel wiring. Also a good idea to clean the grounds WYIT (while you're in there).
