Question Removing oil breather cover?

I am trying to stop the leaking oil on top of the motor on my 69 E. I am not sure where the oil is coming from, but I figure I will replace gaskets on the thermostat and breather cover and go from there. The thermostat o-ring was no problem, but the breather cover would not come off due to a hook/ring that appears to be mounted to a bolt just forward of the breather cover. I guess this is a crankcase bolt, and I'm not sure what the purpose of this ring is. I guess it may be a hook for hoisting the motor. I haven't seen it in any of my manuals.

I loosened the cover, but since I could not get it past this hook, I wasn't able to install a new gasket. Now it is likely to leak, where it may have not have leaked before.

Does anyone know what this hook/ring is for? If it is attached by a cranckcace bolt, can I remove the bolt without any problems? If I do remove this ring, should I reinstall it? Any ideas will help.

Thanks
Ron

Ron,

Your breather cover is probably warped!

Another source of serious oil leaks is the short oil-supply line from oil pressure sender/banjo bolt to the MFI injection pump.

Sorry, I think my question was too vague. I am having problems taking the breather cover off because of the ring in the center of the pic. After loosening the nuts the cover must come straight up and off, but mine hits this ring. I didn't actually notice oil leaking from the breather cover, but thought I'd replace the gasket just in case. Now that I have partially removed the cover without changing the gasket, I'm afraid it will leak for sure.
Warren, I noticed that oil line with the banjo fitting looked pretty suspect also.

Thanks again

Ron

Hi Ron, yes that is an engine hoist ring, and generally can be swiveled forward by loosening the case nut/bolt that holds it, allowing you to lift the breather cover past it. If you cant swivel the ring forward enough to remove the cover, than you will have to unfasten the bolt/nut and ring to remove the breather cover, no big deal. Definitely return the hoist ring after the cover installation, mandatory for hoisting the engine around.

I looked at a 993 engine on the floor of a shop and it too had that "hook" your talking about near the oil breather housing.
