Heat Treating Brass - Mettalurgy wonks?
I'm heating brass oill lines to dull cherry red - don;t ask me why!
Can't remember if they need to be quenched in water while hot to anneal the metal, or just cooled normally. Anyone have the answer? Thanx!

Brass is a solid solution alloy; it can't be hardened by quenching. Brass can only be hardened by coldwork (drawing, rolling, etc.). Just let it cool. If you're working out dents or crushed spots you did the right thing to heat the lines cherry red; it is also good (and easier) to do the reshaping while the lines are hot but cold is okay too as long as the sections being worked were annealed by heating them cherry red. Cheers, Jim
