What is wrong with this picture?
 

Today I received a 915 trans from a seller, on the pelican board, who said it was insured (it was not and I asked for it to be insured) that his mechanic said the trans shifted fine and turned over easily.

Well unless it was damaged, the rusty selector shaft is frozen in which case the seller was not honest. I can see that it is bent. What should I do?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...ft on tran.jpg

OH and the crate to the left is from HARALD in germany. I know everthing in there should be ok.

Do I see pebbles or bits of styrofoam packing jammed between the shift rod and the seal?! It looks like the shift rod end of the tranny collided with something. It may have been fine before it started it's trip but if it hit, or was hit by something or even slid around inside it's box or crate such damage could have occurred during shipping. Good luck, Jim

I see your additional photos; I would never ship a 915 like that. The shifter rod needed protection around it. If it came on that pallet, additional blocking should have been nailed around the shifter rod and more tie down banding used. Blocked inside of a full crate or box would have been much better. You would not believe the damage I've seen forklifts do. Insurance might have helped but the shipper may have simply responded with an inadequate packing claim. Sorry, Jim

If you can find and photograph fresh scrape marks on the underside of the selector shaft, you might have a viable claim that someone in the shipping company tried to pick it up from the end, instead of underneath the pallette as should be the proper procedure.
It also looks like it was properly secured to the pallette and covered as well.

I would guess that box in the photo was around and tied down to the crate. If so, then it would have been more than adequate to protect the transmission.

No, the crate in the back arrived from germany on a separate frieght company.

The shifter shaft will not move, its forzen, it is also rusty and there are no marks on it. So does this mean that it could be bent by hand trying to lift it? My other trans does not seam that delicate. I think it was bent before it was shipped. Which is disturbing. Mainly because there are no marks on the shaft.

Try prying out those bits of crud in the selctor seal in the top photo.

By the way they're jamming the shift rod against the housing, I'd say that's half the problem.

those are just two pebbles. I wish it was a simple as removing them but the shifter is frozen and I cant budge it. I would think that it would have some play. Maybe the whole thing is just siezed up with rust.

I dont know really anything about 915 trannys, but if there is an extension on the front of it, can the thing just be taken off, and straitened with heat?
Other than that you might want to start a paper dialogue with the sender for terms of return and go that route.

If it is in gear i would be surprised if you would be able to move it around much considering there is no way to get leverage. I bought a tranny once and thought the same thing. You need one of those T handle transmission tools to be sure. A little surface rust is easily handled with some steel wool. I would mess with it a little before you write it off.
