Porsche Crest Gerry Sutterfield and his Porsche...

917-30. While a lot of the R&T and C and D articles on Porsches are widely available through the Brooklands series of books, MT's articles have largely disappeared. I picked up some old issues recently including the July 1980 issue with this article on the last production Porsche 917-30. I've got another article with the driving impression from this car (after Gerry got over the ownership thing and decided to not let the car be a "Garage Queen").

Enjoy!

Great read, Thanks John! I had forgotten all that history with Penske involvement in Porsche racing. Now if those roundy-round racers only knew...

Interesting, thanks John. I wonder where this car is now, any idea?

Of the five completed cars only this one and the adjustable wb factory car were not at Rennsport, unless this one has been repainted, as all three at RRII were in Penske livery.

"Here..." as Paul Harvey use to say "...Is the rest of the story." Mister Sutterfield got tired of having 1300 HP garage queen, so he started to drive it, and let Motor Trend take it for a spin too.

Enjoy!

According to 962.com chassis number 5 (Sutterfields car) is now in the hands of a private owner in Sweden. Interestingly, I guess Sutterfield also owned the 908 that finished second at Le Mans. I guess life is good when you're a Porsche importer at the right time.

I think that was the best Motor Trend article that I've ever read. Good find.
I'm glad that they took the beast out for exercise, and hopefully still do. I hate the thought of it only being on display.
