What differences between various SSI exchangers ???

Hello everyone,

I may have the opportunity to buy a pair of almost new 3.2 SSI heat exchangers from someone I know, for a reasonable price.
He wants to get rid of them because he feels a loss of performance since fitting them, plus the inside diameter is smaller than on the genuine exchangers, which is really driving him mad.

I am thinking of using these on my 2.2 (for which I was going to buy stainless exchangers anyway), but I have no idea what differences there are between all the different SSI models that are available on the market.

If necessary, I can easily make simple mods, having access to a milling machine and a TIG welder.

If the differences are such that it would be impossible to fit, my second choice would be to fit them to a 3.0 engine that I will be rebuilding soon.
Apart from cutting off the extensions that normally fit into the 3.2 ports, would there be any other modifications necessary?

Thank you in advance

Oliver

You'll need to figure out how to affix them, due to the flange high differences. Search "thin flange SSI" here to find pictures of the differences.

Hello Eric,
thanks for your reply.
I had seen that thing about the flange thickness, and that would not be an issue to fix.
Aparrently this would be the only difference between the SC and the 3.2 (and the protruding tube too).
The answer I can't find is about possible differences between the 1966-74 SSI and the later ones, if there is any?
(The 69-74MFI version seems to have some injection pre-heat, I understand that this is a different version)

Flange thickness and the extensions are dealt w/ fairly easily w/ a saw and different studs, but if the 2.2 has MFI it will want a stove for the right side header as seen on this pic of a 2.7RS w/ oe exhaust

Thanks Bill, no, my 2.2 is a "T" so no need for the MFI heating.
The thing I don't understand is that any seller of these SSIs does not list a single thin-flange model that would fit classics as well as the 2.7-3.0 vehicles. So I'm trying to understand whether or not there is a major difference in the air box shape or the positioning of the rear hot air fittings, or the tube diameter, that would cause a problem when tring to fit an "incorrect" model.
