Jumper lead mishap
I did a dumb thing jumper leads + to - donor car OK but 1980 911SC started OK but gen light stays on. Have I fried the diodes in the alternator or killed the voltage reg.
This is my first post but have been looking in here for about 4 years. Will appreciate any help. Thanks. |

I have read where the voltage regulator can be damaged by this and gets stuck open. Somehow this can feed the headlights with uninterrupted power. I'd start with replacing the VR and look for fried wires along the way. :-(

Well I would say fried diodes in the alternator, check its not charging by measuring for a voltage rise across the battery when the engine is running at speed. If you did not turn the key on you probably lucked in comparatively because you would have fried more than the alternator diodes if you did.
