Porsche VIN number info
Hi guys. Can someone help me out here. I wanted to get an understanding on what the numbers and letters mean on a VIN plate.
My Vin number is "9117302089 next to the Typ 911 then a box border with"K" in it. then across at the top is "Heinzeinrichtung Typ" 911 S 66 I guessing the numbers at the bottom of the plate is weight of the car as it states kg. The numbers on the alloy plate do match the chassis numbers so its correct. The previous owner stated to me that the car is a 1977 2.7 ltre and a J series of that year. any info on this is greatly appreciated. ![]() Last edited by AUSTmike; 11-12-2022 at 01:42 AM.. |

In the 1970s, a 10-digit version was used and the model name was shown with three digits.
930 6 8 0 0001 ... 9999 ^ 1 ^ 2 ^ 3 ^ 4 ^ 5 model name 911 = 911 (non turbo) 930 = 911 turbo 914 = 914/6 (914/4 got VW-chassis number) 924 928 model year 0= 1970, 1 = 1971 ... 9 = 1979 engine type 1970 - 1971: 1 = 911 T, 2 = 911 E, 3 = 911 S and 916, 4 = 914/6 1972 - 1973: 1 = 911 T, 2 = 911 E, 3 = 911 SE, 5 = 911 T Carburetor, 6 = 911 SC 1974 - 1975: 1 = 911, 3 = 911 S, 4 = Carrera USA, 6 = Carrera 1975: 7 = 911 turbo 1976 - 1977: 0 = 912 E, 2 = 911 S USA, 3 = 911, 6 = Carrera, 7 = 911 turbo, 8 = 911 turbo (USA) 1978 - 1979: 1 = 928 (USA/Japan), 2 = 911 SC (USA) 928 (ROW), 3 = 911 SC, 7 = 911 turbo, 8 = 911 turbo (USA/Japan) body 0 = Coupé, 1 = Targa, 2 = Coupé by Karmann, 3 = 914 Targa continuous counting |

Thanks Guys. Much appreciated. I have the 5 blade fan so having the US version makes sense.I do have the 11 fan but the 5 blade is a lot of trouble trying to get off.

Might be cheaper to remove the 5 Blade and install the 11 Blade, rather than rebuilding an overheated engine. From what I recall the 5 Blades were a bit short on air delivery.

One comment is that the "3" generally meant a non-US RoW car. My VIN is "91163....". It started off life in Germany. There were no plain 911s (non-S) sold in the US in 1976/77. I bet this car is a RoW car - not a US car.
