'87 911 with LSD (gear oil choice)
OK, many threads here so hopefully 1 more is OK.
I have an '87 911 with limited slip and need a good, safe choice for gear oil. This will be my first gear oil DIY change. thanks, Dave |

Most swear by Mobil Delvac 75W-90
Not Mobil-1, that's different stuff. -- Link -- Oh, and make sure you can get the "Fill" plug out before you remove the "Drain" plug ;-)

Will he need an oil additive or friction modifier for the Delvac (for the LSD)?
+1 on the fill plug first.

JMHO, but a proper gear oil doesn't need an additive of any kind. We use Delvac in our G50-equipped race cars for better shifting and LSD performance since it doesn't contain friction modifiers.

Hey Kev,
I also have an 87 with LSD and I used Castrol 75w90 full synthetic when I changed my fluid last week. Says right on the bottle that its suitable for LSD. I couldn't find the fabled Delvac stuff on our side of the border, so I used Castrol. Works well so far!

Walmart and most of your FLAPS don't carry Delvac, but many of the big trucks driving down the highway use it. You can get the Delvac at a heavy truck shop or any Esso commercial sales location. Unfortunately directly from Esso, it is only available in 20 litre containers. If you were to go to your friendly Kenworth or Freightliner or Peterbilt or independent shop with a large bottle of rye and an empty oil container, I'm sure you could convince them to fill it with the Delvac - they buy it by the barrel. All the highway tractors use synthetic oil in their transmissions, and many shops use Delvac.
