This BBS saved me a lot of trouble last night. Thanks!

Had to go for a meeting in SF on Friday so I decided to take the p-car up Highway 1 on Thursday and drove it back over the 5 on Friday afternoon. As usual, it was very hot on that road and I was running pretty fast with the A/C on the entire time. After about five hours, just before the Tajon pass, we decided to stop for a bite. Got back to the car and it did not want to start anymore. Thanks to this board, I knew about the failure related to the solenoid getting heat soaked. So I jacked it up at little and tapped the solenoid with the tire wrench. Started without any trouble after that. I was not in a good spot for a push start and calling AAA would not have helped that much as we were still far from home so we probably would have had to spend the night in the area. Thanks to the quick fix, we got home with just a little delay.

I talked to my wrench this morning and he suggested replacing the entire starter with a rebuilt Bosch for about $250 parts and 1 hour ($78) labor. I know that the top bolt is the difficult one on this job but is it as difficult for a G50 car? Does dropping the transmission a few inches, which gives some additional space, make it an easier job than the 915 or is it still pretty hard to get to?

you have to drop the front of the trans down several inches to get at the top nut. disconnect the shift linkage from the trans, and the heater hoses if they get tight. not particularly easy even with the trans dropped.
