Forgot prior location of brake pads
So I took my calipers off to be rebuilt and I bagged up all the parts from each caliper. I know which pads are from the right rear caliper, which are from the left rear, etc., but what I don't know is which pad came from the inside of the caliper and which came from the outside. Is there a trick to figuring this out? Does this matter? Or can I just put them back on in any particular formation?

Me neither, I've even moved a more heavily wearing pad to a lightly wearing position to even them up some when going from track pads back to my street ones. They don't all wear "exactly" the same. I do like them to look fairly evenly flat.

Shouldn't matter, but since they're out, and they don't really cost that much, why not swap them for new. It is the brakes, after all...

The question is moot, since you don't know the original position. You have two options - put them back in any way you like, or buy new brake pads.
I do not believe it makes any difference which way they go in. |

Skuff them up with some sandpaper and put them back on. I would put the thicker of the two pads on the "puck" side of the caliper because that is what places force on the pad and thus wears it out quicker. You may be able to look at the back side of the pad and see the impression previously made by the puck.
