				Voltage output of 911SC coil

Does anyone know the voltage output of the Bosch coil on a 911SC?

Well then it's too late because I have already gone bald . Seriously though, I just looked at the owner's manual, Haynes, and Bentley manuals and couldn't find the #of volts coming out of the coil.

I'm guessing around 12KVDC. You'll need a scope to measure it though. Although you can get a ballpark by seeing how the spark will jump a gap. Warren

What I am getting at and I don't mean any indifference to our host, could/would a non-Bosch coil work in these cars. It seems quite absurd that a coil which is nothing more than a very large capacitor, would cost over $250. I recently had a 6 yrs old coil fail on me. The replacement I put in, I had it as a spare since 2008, cost all of $50 and it's a Bosch (bag it came in said "Wells Electronic") I looked that coil up and that $50 coil now cost $191 !!!!! Can one use a MSD coil that has a max voltage output of 45,000 volts? Advance auto has one for $45.

12KV seems a little low...but if you take into effect the gap of the plug at the pressure in the chamber ... then 12KV might do it...but a good High Performance coil would be more in the 25KV range I think. I know that a Ford Thunderbolt ignition system puts out closer to 35KV. Bob

In deference to Nicola Tesla, the coil is a transformer. In another recent thread, the MSD Blaster high vibration coil was touted as being a suitable replacement. Cost $50 MSD 8222 Blaster High Vibration
