Value for Insurance Coverage
 

I need to reassess my agreed value for my '81 911SC sunroof coupe. I currently have it insured for $19000, but have been told this may be too low.

This is a one-owner car; I picked it new up in 4/81.

It is mostly stock with the following modifications:
Heater backdate, A/C delete, SSI w/ M+K 2→1, console delete, 7 & 8x16 Fuchs with polished rims, stock front spoiler, Turbatrol fender cooler, short shifter, Turbo tie rods, tensioner update, Mainely Custom sump plate, Rennline stainless engine mount bar.

Paint is original Swartzmetallic (with some bodywork done over the years.) Black interior excellent w/ black headliner. Have original floor mats stored. Approx. 75,000 miles. Complete engine rebuild with new rings, rod bearings, cams, top end, clutch by Dan Jacobs in 2007.

Guesses welcome.

$30k +. If you were to sell it I could see it bringing at very minimum 25. The one-owner aspect is pretty rare, and it sounds like it's in very good condition - original paint, recent engine rebuild. I doubt you could replace that car for under 30, if you could replace it at all, without spending years looking.

The Hagerty web site current valuation is roughly between $18K and $25K. Similarly, last year's Excellence magazine price estimate is also $18K to $25K.

Agreed value on my insurance is $25k. And I'm probably going to up it to 28 next season.

id be interested in hearing about the last SC that sold for close to 30K .. You have to realize that we are emotionally atached to our cars .. I think The value of a Targa would be 15-25 for a nice one, top end of that Scale for a really nice one .. after that youa re into carrera money and i dont think many SC's go for that ...

It's funny you say that. When I switched to Leland-West last year, they asked what value I would like to insure for and I said $10,000. The lady said are you sure about that? I ended up going with $24,000 for a 79 Targa with 160,000+ miles. I know I couldn't sell it for $24,000, but it's nice to know I can get that much if it gets totaled.

Just bumped my '83 SC from 20 to 25k...233k miles but a 'new' 930-10 motor. It would be hard to replace ay that figure really.

My '84 Carrera has a stated value of $30k. 85k miles, fantastic shape.

This i totally agree with ... the value of the car i think is not directly related to the insured amount in the case of classic car ..

When i got my classic car ins the woam told me I can vlaue it at whatever i want .. the premiums will just be higher .. so I decided on 20K and im happy with my premiums.

He's looking for insurance value. I'm not saying he could necessarily sell it for $30k, but if it were a total loss to be replaced and he wanted to find a one-owner, 75k mile, engine-rebuilt sunroof coupe, I can't see someone parting with theirs for under 30. Most folks who've owned a 30+ year old car since new aren't going to want to sell it unless the price is really right. And insurance valuation is replacement value, which isn't necessarily market value.

So I'm currently going through the car insurance renewal process and it's getting very expensive. What does the agreed value collector car insurance cost for a hypothetical $25k mid-80s 911?

Abt 400 bucks for the year with Hagerty

I bought my 82sc last year for 27k, mind you the market in Canada is different for these cars. It's hard to find a good one and you will pay top dollar. My has all the goodies, full engine rebuild with 964 cams, Glasurit paint done, new interior, 7 and 9 Fuchs. Insured for 30k.

I'd agree with the $22k. $30k seems insane.... I paid $10.5k for mine w/ all the popular upgrades and can't imagine a similar one being worth $20k more because it has nice paint and one owner.
