Too much Oil and now leak?
I accidently put too much oil in my 78 Targa. The oil level was just above the top mark and it was too much. The problem is that I never had an oil leak before and now I'm getting an oil leak. It seems like its coming from the oil reserve area on the right side ot the car(passenger side). Oil seems to be running from the oil reserve down. There look likes a wire and plug thing that the oil is dripping out of on the inside of the wheel well. Does anybody know how to fix it? Is it a major problme? Did I break some seals? I tried to clean the area and thought that the oil leak may have been old oil dripping down but' s not. When I clean it oil eventually runs down.

Correct oil level is mid-way between the marks, engine at operating temperature, on level surface with engine idling. I doubt you blew any seals but you probably have oil in the air box. Either drain some oil out through the oil tank drain (tricky and messy) or suck some out of the filler neck with a suction pump(available at auto parts and supply stores) or a meat baster if you can find one that will fit down oill filler neck. I not sure of your leaking component in the right rear wheel well but there is a rubber "duck bill" valve at the end the air box drain hose; this is usually mounted on the outside of the engine sheet metal on the front of the engine just back of the starter on the passenger side. After you have removed the excess oil from the tank (reservoir as you call it) then remove the air filter cover and air filter. Look for oil or an oil film on the bottom of the air box. If you find some, wipe it up with rags or paper towerls then finish wiping the bottom of the air box with something like "Wet Ones". Cheers, Jim

My '79SC does that too. If I even slightly overfill it it leaks like a sieve with a 1' round circle of oil on the garage floor. As soon as it has leaked all the over filled oil out it's OK again. really wierd but it doesn't like to be above the 1'2 way mark and definitly doesn't like to be over the full mark.
On my car it doesn't do any harm( other than too the garage floor) Bill. |
