Porsche’s New Entry Level: A Toy Car for $900 ByJonathan Welsh Sports car maker Porsche is rolling out a new model it hopes will attract younger drivers – much younger. The company’s Go-Kart pedal car is designed for children starting at age five and can accommodate kids who are as much as five feet tall and 110 pounds. The car weighs in at a svelte 55 pounds, the car maker said, because of its unique chassis structure that includes composite parts and a drivetrain setup borrowed from high-end bicycles. Car enthusiasts will probably rate the kart above garden-variety pedal cars because it has a tubular steel frame, sports-car-style low-profile inflatable tires, sport seat, and hand- and foot-operated brakes. Porsche said the car also reflects the Intelligent Performance theme of efficiency it uses in the development of full-size road cars. With a base price of $900, the kart is inexpensive compared with grown-up Porsches but pricey for a pedal car. Even among German luxury brands, the Porsche toy’s cost is steep. BMW sells a pedal car for about $225 and Mercedes has one that sells for $315. ![]()

While I don't weight 110, I would still like to take one down a steep hill...
