Anyone know this steering wheel?
Hi All. I have a 83 911SC Targa with this steering wheel on it. I don't think this is the stock wheel and I need to take it off. I'm having problems with my signal light switch canceling properly. I think it is because the steering wheel was not put back on by the previous owner properly. My assumption is that if I remove the wheel and centre it properly that it will cancel properly (I currently have to over steer slightly to the right for the left signal to cancel). Problem is I don't know how to remove the horn button. I've tried pushing it in an rotating counter-clock wise but all I've done is remove some of the paint from the button. I'm afraid to try to pry it (and possibly break it) until I can identify the wheel and remove the button. Anyone know this wheel and how to remove it?

Looks like a 930 S wheel but I don't know for sure.
If it were mine, I would just pull the horn pad off. That is what you do with OE wheels. PULL until it releases. The snaps may or may not break but they are replaceable. May want to wait for confirmation on this because I am shooting from the hip. Believe you need a 27MM socket once you are in there.

What Bob said - looks very much like an Aitwe Formel 360 or Indianapolis wheel, same as sold through Techquipment as the "930S" or "968 Club Sport" (the only factory fitment, AFAIK) wheel - although with the incorrect horn pad. If so, there's a round plastic clip with 3 "legs" screwed to the underside of the horn pad and it clips into the horn ring. Repair kits for this plastic ring are cheap from our host. About the only thing about this wheel that is cheap...
You can get the 930S style plain leather horn pad from lenkradshop.de - they're not cheap. If all that's wrong is that the cancel tab is in an inconvenient place, you should be able to get away with just clocking (rotating) the hub adapter on the wheel.

Looks like this ugly thing that came with my car:
![]() There are two screws (you can see the "bumps" where the po used too long screws). remove them and then pull off the horn pad. If there are no screws, just pry the pad off.

Thanks for the responses. In my "newbie" fears I confused the horn "pad" with the horn "button". The pad is just rubber like and pulled off no problem, no clips or anything. Underneath the wheel was attached to a frame by 6 hex type bolts.
I initially just tried to remove the hex bolts and centre the wheel, but the signal on a left turn still wouldn't cancel properly. So I then removed the 27mm nut and pulled the frame off. Underneath I found the canceling ring but it was not adjustable because the horn power wire passed through a hole in the wheel. There is only one position it can be in to cancel both left and right signals properly. The only way the signals will work properly is for the wheel to be off to the right at about 15 or 20 degrees (but still drives straight). Obviously the frame hub was not centred when it was original put on and would have to be punched out realigned and then hammered back in. Not sure if this will damage the frame or not so I'll leave it as it for the time being. |
