Ducktail fit problems

Just got the following photos from the body shop.

Too much gap on the P/S and if they move it from the D/S it drops the P/S bottom corner too low:(

I am stopping by the shop afterwards to take a few more photos.

All Fiberglass Duck?

Is it an all fiberglass duck? I got lucky with my all fiberglass duck fit years ago. The $1000 price tag for the converted steel lid is a bit steep unless you want to run 100+ mph with a duck. Did you fit the grill yet? To reach thru the thick fiberglass, I had to make extension bolts for most of my grill attachments. I lathe cut, drilled, & tapped 12.9 axle bolts to attach the grill. I broke a lot of taps. Best of luck.

Yes, it is all fiberglass.

Disappointing but not uncommon. Smarter minds than mine will chime in, but you might also cross-post this on the Bodywork BBS.

Wild eyed guess says lead body putty if possible. It is going to look awesome so just this speed bump for now...

Well either the duck is square or the aperture into which it is going is square (probably). Why not measure across the diagonals of the engine bay first to see if that is square?

Just a thought

Ian

Ian,

Good question, I will check on the measurements.

Thanks !

Weep Holes

I hope that you get the fit sorted out quickly when you visit the shop. I highly recommend adding some(3) weep holes on the engine side of the tag light bosses(on the corner/radius). The inner pocket around the 72-73 tag light area can collect & hold water. I had to add weep holes to my 73's duck to keep the tag lights from swimming in wash/rain water and corroding.

Common issue with GRP panels, simply build the edges to oversize with grp ( not filler) then re profile to fit. I,ve done several of these no sweat.

Good news. After some more alignment tweaking we were able to get the gaps aligned much better.

Fitting ducktails sucks. Ask me how far a ducktail will fly when hurled like a frisbee across the shop...

Good to see yours is looking better! -- Matt

it's a bit hard to tell in your pics but if your duck has the provisions for the earlier style license plate lights you will need to remove the rubber strip at the bottom of the opening for the duck to close properly.

here is the area i spoke of

rubber strip to remove (i replaced it with some foam weatherstripping)

I did this to mine as well to make it fit. GRP is easy to work.
