My relay seems to run pretty warm.

Bob--UNDO anything you did prior to the wire getting hot. That heat is the result of a short or near short and can possibly destroy your cable and cause a fire. You mentioned working on the fog lights. Go back there and make sure you haven't got wires touching ground--or shorting--or the wrong bulbs, etc.
Do NOT leave your car with that wire heating up! Disconnect the battery. Good Luck http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat1.gif george 86T |
If it isn't anything you touched repairing the fog light the probable cause is a worn fuel pump. It is drawing too much current and you will need to replace the fuse board,
the relay and maybe the relay socket and the pump. This is a real common problem. Check the fuel pump current draw first, although that doesn't always provide the answer. |
thank you very much for your response I ordered new relays and will order a new fuel
pump this morning this happened a few years ago and I did not want to beleave it happend again. I wanted to wait till someone answered my post before my suspisions were confirmed and then order my parts "from pelican of course". Thanks again. BOB |
Why do these fuel pumps go it just does not make sense. When I replace this is there any thing I can do to stop premature wear.

Fuel pump = electric motor = motor windings = windings "sag" = high current draw........heat and load contribute to this. This may be the situation, makes me wonder about buying any rebuilt electric motor.......Ron

Well if I was NOT a porsche fanatic I would
mod this and go with after market Stuff. Well I just ordered all my stuff and next dayed it . From pelican,WHO ELSE!!! BOB and his 80 911SC |
Bob,
Did you put in a higher wattage bulb in your fog lights? More drain where it shouldn't be causes stress and strain elsewhere. I blew a relay instantly by making that mistake and at about $20 a peice, I don't want to make that mistake again! If you are increasing the power of your fogs, make sure to increase the size of the fuse and relay as well. ------------------ Josh Black on Black '84 Carrera |
The windings do NOT cause 99% of the motor failures out there! With fuel pumps, particulate contamination in the fuel causes extra drag and wear, which translates to extra current drain and heat! And, the bushings and bearings suffer with more wear, too, as the result of normal aging, but higher loads, especially!
