....depends how far into the carpet the right foot is.... ;)

Round Barber, here two weeks ago, just above the top white mark. And she was loving every minute of it.

Yup, I know that. I'd just prefer the look of numbers, not hash marks. I agree that the gauge is, well... just a gauge. Can't expect it to be 100% accurate. I figure it's more informative than the oil level gauge, but not by a lot.

This was with no aggressive driving. I guess this is the hard part for me to understand with this car. Folks seem to get all nutty when the temps go beyond 210, but with my old S4 that was twin turbo, my daily summer temps were 235, and up to 250 with long periods of boost (mountain climbs). Never batted an eye.

So, I can't tell if some folks just get crazy with oil temps for no good reason. I have to change my oil about 3k miles since I go from summer to winter weight. I should get an analysis and let that be my guide, I guess.

But, on the other hand, if I have something wrong I'd like to get it fixed.

I doubt there is a problem you'll find. If you change your oil regularly shouldn't be an issue.
If you want to control your temps better then have the fan switch (front right radiator) relayed to a switch in your cockpit so you can engage it at lower temps.

In 100 degree heat a couple weeks ago at between 85-150mpg for 45 mins I had just a touch over 220 and went down to 200 when more sane speeds were averaged. I had more issues with egt's. I swear by this set up.
My car is turbo 3.0 and before my twin coolers and "scoops" I had issues with heat here in vegas.

Brando, it is really quite impressive that you have achieved such a high MPG! You must be doing some special tuning as I only seem to get about 12-13 mpg around town and 16-17 highway (if I'm lucky). :p

///////yeah good numbers\\\\\\\\\
Wish I could duplicate.

One thing I like to do is pop the engine lid when I get back to the garage. I think it cools much faster and there is less prolonged cooking of wires and hoses :)

Those temps were okay (250 is a bit warm) for your Audi. Much of the cooling for our engines is done with air and oil, oil temps being more critical to an air/oil cooled engine.

Pull the gauge, have it calibrated and an overlay with numbers. North Hollywood Speedo will do an exchange. They will likely send you one, core charge/exchange.

Palo Alto has a good rep, never used them.

I've got a IR temp coming in the mail. Going to make sure my engine mounted thermostat is working, and that the gauge is reading correctly in general. It seems to be since the gauge correlates well with the 240 degree OE sensor for the fan, and the 210 degree sensor I have in there now. But, it'll be good to know for sure.

My 87 was running temps like yours. Rebuilt external thermostat and temp needle rarely gets past the first tick. Feel the oil line past the external oil thermostat going to the front of car, feel oil lines on engine side of ext. thermostat. Should be hot past ext. thermostat after it opens. Somewhere around 186 deg? Mine weren't getting hot past the ext. thermostat, got warm but not hot. Not saying its your issue, but it fixed me up.

my '87 911 runs normally right between the 180 and 210 markings. However, as it's been brutally hot here in NJ, it's been running more at the 210 mark.
