Question HOT wire

What's causing my positive wire from the battery to be getting hot? I just noticed today while cleaning out the luggage area.

Thanks,
Cheers, Mark

Too much resistance or too much current flow. High resistance most likely caused by a bad connection. Check cable to cable lug connection and lug to battery post connection for looseness and corrosion. Tighten, replace or clean as appropriate. Too much current is perhaps a big short somewhere or maybe the starter drawing too much current. You'll need to check current with an ampmeter. Cheers, Jim

If the wire is hot *without* the motor running, or any electrical load applied, you better call the F.D.....quick!

Otherwise, suspect a bad connection (as usual) at the battery terminal clamp. Do some cleaning. Also, the battery wire is swaged into the (pot-metal) clamp, and this connection breaks down leading to a high resistance at that point....and thus, your "hot" wire.

Yeah Doug,

I should have been more lucid. This seems to be a problem related to when the engine running. If off, no problems. Even when engine is off and radio etc on, no problem.

I'll go out now and check for bad connections.

Thanks
Cheers, Mark

Okay...thanks guys, got rid of the heat from the battery wire by cleaning up all the terminals.

BUT I ntoiced that the wire leading to and from my fuse for the blower in the front for the aircon. is hot. The first 6cm of wire leading to and from fuse (30amp) is really hot, but as you move awway from the fuse it cools down to cold.

What could be the cause of this?

I have no aptitude for electrics

Cheers and thanks
Mark

Again this sounds like excessive resistance in the fuse contacts. When current flows through the high resistance (across the corroded or dirty connections) it generates heat. Take the fuse holder apart and clean up all the contact areas; then apply some silicone grease to the contacts and reassemble. Also, check that your A/C fan is turning freely. Cheers, Jim

Thanks for the reply Jim,

Had the blower out and checked it over. Spins ok although a bearing was whining a little. Put a bit of oil on it and after a few turns it spins very freely and quietly. Cleaned up the fuse holder when I did the rest of the connections in the front.

Still a hot wire. Maybe I better get down to auto elec. before something catches on fire. Electrics scare the sh$t out of me. I had an electrical fire in a car about 10 years ago while on holiday. Fortunately fire brigade was called (in my absence) and got it under control quickly...but destroyed my holiday

Thanks again guys.

Cheers
Mark
