1971 shifter

I checked and want to replace the nylon bushing under the shift lever on my '71 911S. After removing the shift mech' by taking out the 3 bolts I realized I do not know exactly how the "L" bracket fits in. Notice it is held to the shifter base with 2 smaller (6mm?) bolts but it ALSO has a larger hole at it's tip. Is this hole simply to clear the larger mounting bolts under the floor/tunnel? Or is the "L" bracket clamped between the floor and the base shoe? I hope this is clear enough for an answer. Exploded parts views are unclear. jvm
