911 & Porsche World - 100th issue

Guys and girls: if you can get it at your local newsstand, check out the new 911 & Porsche World magazine. It's the 100th issue of the slick, and has a great supplement on what the magazine feels are the 100 top Porsches. Very good articles and great little cutlines to go along with some exceptionally great photos. The magazine's a bit pricey since it's from England, but nonetheless well worth the historical aspects.

Thumbs down Thanks dd but NO thanks. I'll give it a miss.

I'll make my own little protest and boycott this issue, given the features editor's little storey in this http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/75006-im-saddened-what-ive-seen-board-post496109.html#post496109 thread earlier this month. But hey, that's just my own stance.

Besides, even though it is a "911" (& Porsche World) rag, I think once a reader knows the editors passion (MG's and the 944? over the 911), everything they write about the 911 seems to take on a different perspective, in my view.
But hey - just MHO....... crikey, I don't wanna get sued.

Thanks anyway.

Did they also provide a summary of all the future articles that were promised or referred to but that never made it to press?

I hate it when magazines do that.

And while I'm *****ing, is it only my impression that some of the articles in the last year or so on modified cars read as if they were written by someone who was writing from a few photographs in front of his desk and two ten minute telephone interviews with the owner and the builder?

That's up to you Sean! Free world and all that. I hesitate to return to the subject you mention because I don't want to hi-jack somebody's thread. But can I just say that the legal episode I referred to in the thread was actually very distasteful and caused a lot of personal/family upset. I didn't want to go into details there or here – I only used the episode as an example of what happens all too often on bulletin boards when things get out of control. I am a lot thicker skinned now than I was all those years ago. Unfortunately some people do say things from behind a computer they would never dream of saying in print or to your face. Oh, and the other guy didn't own a Porsche, by the way.

Besides, even though it is a "911" (& Porsche World) rag, I think once a reader knows the editors passion (MG's and the 944? over the 911), everything they write about the 911 seems to take on a different perspective, in my view.

As the associate editor owns a 964, the editor at large a 911S and a Boxster and the features editor 2.7 carrera and a 914/6, I think the fact the editor drives a 944 helps keep a balanced view! Not my choice of car but then it does help redress the 911 bias.... In the same way that your Triumph TR4 helps keep the balance in your garage

But hey - just MHO....... crikey, I don't wanna get sued.
You won't...

Wink Phew!

Ah, but the Porsche is a serious sports car. The TR helps to remind me of that........ and add some humour to my garage ambience.

I'm sure the 911 & Porsche World - 100th issue will be a memorable collectable, Keith........ my loss

When I'm down at the local news-rack, I always take a look at the latest 911& P-World. Almost never *buy* a copy 'cause it's like a Chinese food buffet (appears to fill you up, but you're hungry an hour later).

Remember the issue where they "rebuilt" a 3.0 motor?
Loads of (very colorful) photos, but totally lightweight on hard information.

I see the latest issue has some rubbish about a garden variety 2.7 being *almost* as satifying to own as a 2.7RS. And much cheaper (duh). What a load!

The rag is also chock full of advertising that is primarily useful for UK readers only. For the rest of us it's just filler.

The running reports *can* be interesting, often amusing. Some of the owners should be driving Fords.

Excellence has the best writers, hands down.

Excellence vs. 911& Porsche World

Granted - Excellence has more to offer for us U.S. guys than 911 & Porsche World because it's based on this side of the world. I just thought it was interesting, particularly for the photos. Are there better magazines out there?

Thanks.

Got to disagree on this point Doug. I have that article right here. The Garden Variety 74 Carrera the article is talking about is the Euro version with the 2.7 MFI engine, same as Matt Holcomb's car, and same as the 73 RS.

Absolutely agree about the 3.0 rebuild article series though.

I still buy the mag whenever I see it.

In the same way my crappy Volvo Turbo 'wagon' does for mine! So, do you read Triumph World as well? If not, send me your address and I'll get a copy mailed to you!

I'll get the office to throw in a copy of that, too.

No one magazine is perfect. I enjoy Excellence, but am getting a little sick of all the 996 articles...maybe it is just me, but it seems like there are an awful lot of these. Granted it is the model that is currently out, but I love reading articles about the older 911s. That is why I enjoy 911 and Porsche world, the issues I have read (about 4) have had articles on the 964, the 993 tt, 964rs, etc. It is nice to read about these different models. That is why I subscribed to the magazine. Plus, the articles may not be chock full of relevant information, but that is what we have this bbs for, right?

I still enjoy 911 & P World, although I may take any workshop recomendations with a pinch of salt. i just wish Philip Raby (I think thats who it was) hadn't sold his SC. It seemed the perfect car for tech articles, which have been few and far between in the last wee while. I was looking forward to seeing him doing things like short shift kit, brake refurb, pop off valve and possibly even some customising. I guess it's hard to please everybody though.

I *really* like the Limey m/c mags.
They always have plenty of photos of hot females adorning the pages. Probably way too spicy for 911 & P-World, though.

I subscribe to the 911 & Porsche World and enjoy most of their articles, ads and running reports. Not every issue is as good as they can be. Given I'm on the east side of the Atlantic, the ads gives lots of opportunity for finding parts etc (sorry Wayne, I'll send som orders for lite parts your way as well) I do get a litle tired of the same ads month after month, there isn't much change in the list of companies placing ads in the mag.
I like articles on other Porsche models as well, althou I don't read them as thourogh, but they help to broaden my perspective.

dd74: I particularily liked the 100 best Porsche rating supplement in the 100th issue

I can see that some of you hardcore techies don't get much valuable technical info from the DIY articles, but I think the rest of us do.

Yup, just had my 48th birthday, so I've gotta watch that old ticker....

PS – Ever seen Max Power magazine? If you want cars'n'girls, there you go!

Chick Pics?

I can't imagine any of my car mags with chick pics in them! When I think of those kinds of pictures, I think of Import Tuner or Ricer's Weekly or those motorcycle mags, where the definition of "cute" or "hot" seems to be boob jobs, black lipstick, and an expression like they slept with the teacher all semester and found out they still flunked the class.

As for the P&911 100th issue, I still haven't found a place in Chicago with it on the shelves, and I've tried Borders, B&N, and Relay. Maybe I'll check Books-a-Million tomorrow.

I dig 911 & Porsche World.

You can always find an article on a early 911. Be it a three page article or a small corner of a page with some fellow leaning next to his '65 911 after he finished a Rally. Totally cool.

And I must say I REALLY like the way the Brits write.

Coo blimey, that bloody twit just lost it in that hedge.

Silly sod. What a wanker. Anyone got a fag?

Aweeere.

[a fag is a cigarette in Great Britian for those of you who don't know. I don't want any flaming]

BTW Keith, did Peter Morgan ever get the correct bonnet badge for his'72 911S ?

Great Mag!! Keep up the GOOD WORK !!

Of course, the Universe heard me say this and placed them at the Borders near work tonight. I found this issue and the latest GT Purely Porsche (last copy!) on the shelf. Still can't find anyone carrying 9 Magazine, though.

Flipping through the "Top 100 Porsches" feature, I've already found lots to disagree with! Nice to see a Porsche mag that hasn't forgotten some of the better 356 models, though.

Emanuel
