Tires for stock 73
I have searched and read most every post on this topic, but would like current opinion on a few tires.
The car is an unmodified 1973.5 911 Targa that will see strictly street use. I plan to order 205/60 15, but would consider 215/60 15 if appropriate. I would like to retain a period-correct appearance. I have looked at the Michelin Primacy MXV4, Kumho Solus H16, Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum, Bridgestone Potenza G 019 Grid, and BFG Advantage T/A. Any experience, opinions, suggestions, etc. regarding these or other tires and sizing is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

jac,
I have 72 911t....same basic car. I tired the 205/60 and did not care for them. The 6" wide rim seems narrow for that width of tire. Felt like the side walls flexed. Think about a 195/65-15....almost a perfect match for the 185/70 and they look correct. I run the mxv4.....no track days just 2 lane country road type driving. |

Gary,
Thanks for the reply. Looks like we do some of the same driving.

Sport side
I went more to the sport side the Bridgestone Potenza AS960 Pole Position in 60 series 205/215 on my 73. I also run a 930/10. Just watch the rear fit if you do not have flares. Test fitting is a must especially if you want to run 215s on the back w/o flares. Not noisy and pretty good grip with the AS960. I got the Michelin Primacy MXV4 for the Camry and they are really nice on the Camry.

I think Goodyear has the original size 185/60 15
another option is 195/65 15

Dodge Man and RS, thanks for the feedback.
RS, you may appreciate what prompted my post was a phone call I made to Kathy over at Jones' with some questions regarding my car. She incorrectly thought I was returning a call from one of the guys regarding tires and she felt like she ruined the surprise that my 911 was running and ready from the road. When I have time after work, I usually stop by and at my last visit the motor was still on a stand. Needless to say, I am taking off early tomorrow.

On 6" wheels I wouldn't go wider than 205/60. The 195 tires mentioned above are, also a good choice. If you are mainly going for street, or original appearance, the widest possible tire isn't nesecary. Get something between 60-70 series. Too short a tire just doesn't look right on a longhood and will make your speedo read incorrectly.

Kugel is correct I mistyped 185/70 are the original which is why the 195/65 work as first alternate. I had such a hard time finding decent tires I went to 16's and I use re-11 in a 205-55.
The 205's on a 15" are better suited to a 7" rim
