Replacing the pinion bearing on the 915 transmission. The new bearing has a lip on the cage where the original one does not. The source where I purchased the bearing lists it as genuine Porsche part. Question: which direction does the lip on the cage face? Directly against the pinion or opposite side? Also, a side question. Pete's 915 tutorial says to clear and dry the bearing surfaces before pressing them on. I plan on doing this but what is the reasoning? Is it to cut down on the chance of spinning one or is it just to prevent debris from getting in the transmission? Thanks.

generally that "lip" is to provide a groove for a snap ring - it should not affect your use of the brg w/o one so long as the dimensions are the same as the one you removed
insofar as the direction of mounting - it would make a difference if the distance from rollers to edges is different, but if identical - not an issue - again, look at the one you removed and how it was mounted

Thanks Larry. I will measure distance from roller to edge to confirm but it looks to be the same. Thanks again.
